NaNoWriMo

Here will be the setting of my illustrious novel. Or, rather, my illustrious NaNo novel. In previous years I've attempted this exercise and failed, due to the sordid business of academic work, but probably more can be blamed on sheer laziness.

This year, I know two others (in real life!) who are doing this: my sister and a friend. That means two people to call me up and yell at me if I don't update. Also, this year, I lack schoolwork to bog me down (do not let me use knitting projects as an excuse!).

The concept for my novel is gimmicky and kind of hacky, but it's too late to think of a really good one, and anyways, creativity be damned. I have been a long fan of the Magnetic Fields, especially of their triptych album "69 Love Songs." I'm also rather bad at writing sustained plot lines and character development over a long period of time, which is why I'm drawn to things like flash fiction and short stories. So - my NaNo novel is going to be an exploration / reaction to the 69 Love Songs, with a chapter inspired by each song. The chapter might be a literal depiction of the story contained in the lyrics, or I might just draw upon the atmosphere evoked by the song.

That was a rather highfalutin' way of saying that I am going to be writing Magnetic Fields fanfic. Oh well. I'll be happy if my novel doesn't abruptly end with five thousand iterations of "banana man train."
